Cyanotypes were invented in the 1840s, originally for the duplication of architectural and engineering drawings (blueprints). Botanist artist Anna Atkins pioneered their use with plant forms. They are now used by artists and designers to create permanent beautiful and atmospheric images using wide ranges of subject matter.
Create beautiful cyan blue photographic images on papers and fabrics.
Use natural materials, objects and transparencies to create images with a traditional photographic process. All materials are included, but feel free to bring objects, 2 and 3-dimensional, to experiment with. If you would like to experiment using existing photographs or drawings as negatives, bring them along and I will show you how to create acetate negatives. We will be working in the landscape and in the workshop.
The sessions will be held in the grounds of East Pines, Mettingham. The studio is set in rambling gardens, surrounded by trees and fields. A perfect space for developing skills and ideas, supported by expert tuition. Coffee and tea (and cake!) etc. will be available. Bring a packed lunch. You will leave with a selection of your own prints at the end of the day.

Advanced Cyanotype Workshop
Most Thursdays 5-7.30pm
The emphasis in this evening session is on developing existing techniques and ideas in cyanotype production, gained from one of my Friday cyanotype workshops or elsewhere. So some prior experience is useful, though not vital.
Participants will be able to prepare cotton canvas on a large scale as well as smaller pieces of the same fabric. Also paper of various sizes, and some A4 pretreated cotton sheets. Participants will also be able to prepare acetates, adapting photographic sources using Photoshop and inkjet printing. We will explore expressive and creative methods of coating. We will develop bleaching and toning techniques using natural tannins such as tea. We will expose dry and wet cyanotypes using daylight and UV lamps as appropriate. Information will be available on the finer points of developing and washing cyanotypes.
Some participants may choose to use an evening workshop to prepare surfaces to then expose during a daytime workshop.
